A total of 26,454 individuals have successfully re-registered to vote for the 2026 Local Council and Women’s Development Committee Elections and Public Referendum of the Republic of Maldives, scheduled to be held on 4 April 2026.
In accordance with the relevant regulations, ballot boxes may be established in resorts and industrial workplaces where a minimum of 30 registered voters is met. Based on the re-registration submissions received, 21 resorts have fulfilled this requirement and have therefore been approved for the placement of ballot boxes, while no industrial workplaces met the required threshold for ballot box establishment.
With regard to overseas voting, ballot boxes may be established where at least 2,000 individuals have re-registered in a country and a minimum of 40 individuals have re-registered within a single constituency. However, the number of individuals who re-registered to vote abroad did not meet the stipulated requirements. Specifically, 499 individuals re-registered in Malaysia, while 186 individuals re-registered in Sri Lanka.
Individuals who applied to re-register in resorts and industrial workplaces that did not meet the required threshold for ballot box placement, as well as those whose ballot secrecy cannot be ensured, have been formally notified. These individuals were provided the opportunity to change their registered voting location between 8:00 p.m. on 24 February 2026 and 1:30 p.m. on 26 February 2026. This opportunity was extended only to those who received notice that ballot boxes would not be established at their requested voting locations.
Individuals who did not submit a new re-registration request within the specified period will remain registered to vote at their currently assigned voting locations.
Information regarding voting locations where ballot secrecy cannot be ensured will be officially published in the Government Gazette of the Maldives and on the Elections Commission website at www.elections.gov.mv.
