All four positions reserved for media industry representatives on the newly established Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) have been filled without the need for a public vote.

The election, originally scheduled for 11 October 2025, did not take place as the number of eligible candidates in each category was equal to the number of available seats.

For the two seats allocated to Members Representing Broadcasters, four applications were received, of which three met the eligibility criteria. Following the withdrawal of one eligible candidate, two candidates remained for the two available positions, making a public vote unnecessary.

Similarly, for the two seats designated for Members Representing Other Media, only two eligible candidates submitted their nominations before the close of the nomination period. As the number of valid candidates equaled the number of seats in both categories, the Elections Commission declared all four individuals elected unopposed.

The elected representatives are:

  • Mr. Abdul Azeez Ibrahim of Moonimaage, Sh. Feydhoo, and Mr. Zam’ath Ali Waheed of Mala, Gdh. Thinadhoo — representing broadcasters.
  • Ms. Simaahaa Naseem of Veleega, Gdh. Rathafandhoo, and Mr. Husain Thafeeq of Hisaam, Hdh. Vaikaradhoo — representing other media.

With this announcement, all media-elected positions on the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission have now been filled.

Under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act (Act No. 16/2025), four of the seven members of the MMBC are to be elected from among media professionals, as stipulated in Article 17 of the Act.
